Top Movies 2017

Kylee & Courtney

It’s February and movies are just now getting into full swing. After what we both considered to be a slow January, we’re already looking ahead to the upcoming blockbusters. Here are our personal top 3 movies we’re looking forward to in 2017. Do you agree? Will our top calls end up as box office flops? Guess we’ll find out.

Kylee’s top 3 (in order of release date):

  • Beauty and the Beast

Emma Watson? Yes. That dude from Downton Abbey? Um YES. Questionable CGI? Sign me up! Ok, so I actually think the CGI for the beast has been looking a little funky, but regardless, I am still super pumped to see the childhood movie I love get a live action remake. The Jungle Book’s adaptation was great (even though I don’t actually like the Jungle Book) but I was a little disappointed in their halfway attempt at the music. So I’m really excited to hear Emma Watson belt it. I just hope I’m not setting my expectations a little too high.

  • Guardians of the Galaxy 2

Confession time: even I am beginning to feel the wear of all the superhero movies coming out. Although some are great, the story lines feel like they’re getting more and more redundant (anyone else feeling this way? Nope? Ok cool). But I will admit that I am stoked for GoG2. The first one was so refreshingly funny and not as focused on the drama of a forgettable villain that I’m dying to see how the second one shakes out. The trailer already has me cracking up so my hopes are high.

  • The Mummy

Nostalgia is a powerful thing. And unfortunately in this case, it’s enough to sucker me in. I can still remember the first time I saw The Mummy…it gave me nightmares for days! All those creepy beetles? Yeah, no thank you I will pass. Plus add in the big Hollywood uh-oh when they accidentally released the first trailer with only the audio of Tom Cruise screaming (check out minute 1:09 & 1:18. It will change your life forever.) I knew that regardless of being a Hollywood cheap shot, I’m going to have to see this.

Can I just say that I love a good movie. I love being transported to another place or another time for a few hours. It’s cathartic. I love a story told well…by the script, the acting, the chemistry between characters, the costuming, the locations and special effects. I could go on. But I won’t. Instead, I’ll give you the three movies I’m looking forward to most in 2017.

Courtney’s top 3:

  • Beauty and the Beast

I’m totally with Kylee on this one. I’m a HUGE fan of the original Disney animated film and am anxiously looking forward to the live action version. The special effects look intense but seem to blend well with the real actors. I feel like sometimes Hollywood gets too excited about CGI and forgets that flesh and blood actors will always trump what a computer can do. I’m hoping Disney has kept most of the music in this new version. Great musical scores and moving lyrics can add so much depth and staying power to a film (I’m still listening to the song Audition from La La Land). I’ve heard rumor that Emma Watson sings in Beauty and the Beast. Can’t wait to experience it in March.

  • Dunkirk

I’m a Christopher Nolan fan and as such, I’m looking forward to his directorial look at the Battle of Dunkirk. The backdrop of history tends to make for great film and from the trailers I’ve seen this should be well worth seeing. Films like this always leave me wondering how anyone survived World War II and I walk away with a profound gratitude for those that served and sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today. I hope Dunkirk does at least that much credit to the war.

  • Wonder Woman

I have to admit to really looking forward to Wonder Woman (due out in June). When I first heard it was being made into a movie, I openly laughed. All I could think of was the cheesy version from 1976 starring Lynda Carter. But for 2017 Hollywood has revamped our lady hero. Gal Gadot rocks as Diana (aka – Wonder Woman) and Chris Pine isn’t too shabby as the male lead. There seems to be good chemistry between them and the script comes across as witty but wise. Love, love, love the strong, capable character Hollywood has created for our Woman of Wonder. I will definitely be seeing this one!
