Adding Spin Classes to our Routine

Courtney & Kylee

I’ve been using the same workout routine for 3 years now and it’s become flat. I’ve been stuck in a big rut. So what to do? Kylee suggested changing things up by switching to spin classes for a while. Great idea! Seriously…great idea! Even just changing my routine for a couple of weeks has made going back to my familiar workout feel fresher and I’ve been able to attack it with greater enthusiasm. I’ve long admired women who spin on a regular basis because they tend to develop long lean legs. And, I am referring to spinning/cycling on a stationary bike with a weighted flywheel…not using a stationary exercise bike. There’s a big difference. I’ve also been told there is a big difference in the results you get by using clip shoes as opposed to just wearing gym shoes when you spin. I’ve not quite decided to invest in a pair of clip shoes but I’ll tell you that spinning definitely helps tone everything from the waist down. So, saddle up and ride!

A few months ago I was bottoming out on my fitness routine. Basically, once I start making up more excuses than usual to stay home from the gym I know it’s time to switch it up. That’s when I stumbled upon a spinning class. Now I had taken spinning here and there, but never really fell in love with it until this time around where I fully committed to going for at least a month. And it definitely was an adjustment for those of us that prefer to do our own thing at the gym, but now that I understand what it can be, it’s honestly my new favorite exercise!

What Courtney loves about spinning:

  • Spinning is a super effective lower body exercise and great for your heart.
  • Spinning is a fun group exercise class with tons of upbeat music to keep you going.
  • Spinning is low impact. If you have knee issues like I do and running is no longer an option, spinning may be the answer.
  • Spinning for an hour burns a mega load of calories!

What Kylee loves about spinning:

  • You get to sit…for most of the class. I mean come on, what other exercises do you really get to burn that many calories while sitting the grand majority of the time! That’s just cool.
  • You have an instructor to push you along. Now for me, one of the biggest enemies to my fitness regime is myself. I tend to fall into a rut, doing the same thing over and over. I also tend to talk myself out of running that last mile or lifting the last set, with an instructor yelling and encouraging, I’ve found myself much more prone to completing it through to the end
  • It boosts your run game. One of the biggest surprises to me was to find that after spinning a few weeks, I was suddenly able to break my personal running distance goal. Spinning has majorly increased my cardio capacity

What Courtney hates about spinning:

  • For the first week or so, you will be sore. Saddle sore that is! There’s really no way around it. But if you stick it out, you’ll get past it. So hang in there!
  • To get the most from spinning, you should probably get a pair of clip shoes. Talk to your instructor if you have questions about what to buy. FYI: Clip shoes are expensive. Expect to spend $100 for a decent pair.
  • I, personally, get frustrated with group exercise classes because I hate waiting around for the “fun” to begin. I much prefer to do my own thing. But, changing it up with a few weeks of spin has definitely helped re-energize my workout routine.

What Kylee hates about spinning:

  • For someone like me who’s not skilled enough yet to do it on my own, I have to fit my schedule around the class schedule.
  • It can be really intimidating the first time with people who know what they’re doing, especially setting up the bike. But ask the instructor to help you fit the bike! And don’t be afraid to take breaks when you need to.

Courtney’s rating on spin classes: Meh 😐

Kylee’s rating on spin classes: Can’t Live Without It 😍
Scale: Never again, Not worth it, Meh, Like it, Love it, Can’t Live Without It
